How to Download Pinterest GIFs.

Pinterest hosts a huge collection of GIFs on DIY boards, design boards and moodboards. Here’s how to save them today — and the honest status of full GIF downloads in PinSaver.

What you can do right now

Full, one-click GIF downloads in PinSaver are coming soon and will match the quality of our video downloader. Until that update ships, here are the reliable ways to save a GIF from Pinterest on each device:

  • iPhone & iPad: long-press the GIF and choose Save Image. The GIF saves to your Photos library, animation intact.
  • Android: long-press the GIF and pick Download image. It lands in your Gallery as an animated GIF.
  • PC & Mac: right-click the GIF and choose Save image as…, then pick a folder. The file keeps the .gif extension and animates in any modern player.

Tip: If the GIF is inside a video pin (many Pinterest “GIFs” are actually looping videos), skip the right-click trick — paste that pin’s link into the PinSaver video downloader instead, and you’ll get the full-resolution MP4.

Why GIF and video are different formats

A GIF is a sequence of still frames, while most “animated” pins on Pinterest are actually short MP4/WebM videos in disguise. That’s why a video downloader often gives you a better result than a GIF save: the video rendition is sharper and much smaller than the same animation burned into a GIF. When full GIF support lands, PinSaver will fetch the true source in whichever format the pin stores — GIF or MP4 — automatically.

Why the tool is so honest about this

Plenty of sites will happily claim to “download every GIF” and then hand you a broken or re-compressed result. We’d rather tell you exactly where we are: video downloads work perfectly today, and GIF downloads are coming. That honesty is also why you can trust the tool on the things it already does — original files, no watermark, no surprises.

How you’ll recognize GIF support when it ships

Look for “GIF” appearing alongside the video quality choices in the downloader. Until then, the video route above covers the vast majority of animated pins on Pinterest with better quality than a manual GIF save. Public, personal use only — the exact same rules as our video downloads.

A practical test to identify a video pin

Tap the pin and watch: if it plays as continuous motion with sound control (or a pause icon), it’s a video — download it. If it advances frame by frame and shows a “GIF” badge, it’s a true GIF — save it manually today, and one-click it once full support lands.
